Not long until early access starts :D

A couple of us are going Daggerfall faction on the EU megaserver. Nothing formal, but if you're undecided on faction feel free to join us.

After the sadness that was the beta, no. I was shocked at how disappointing it was, given all the hype. I know opinions vary, but the overall consensus seems to be one of it being a bit, well, rubbish, especially given it's pay to play model.

Out of interest, how far did you get? The starting zones were a bit linear - they've wisely now made them optional, with new players starting in the first major city - and the game doesn't really come into it's own until around level 10-12.

There was a good post on MMO-Champion the other day, in the context of an inevitable wow vs ESO discussion:

Quote:

WoW is better if...
• You value challenge more than story
• You value min/maxing, recount meters and maximizing power
• You like having every ability hotkeyed and at your disposal
• You feel quests and leveling areas are a means to an end: reaching max level
• Enjoy the overt pop culture references, highly stylized art, and generally lighthearted themes
• Prefer ability balance, but accept a degree of homogenization
• Crafting is a side thing only
• Best items in game are dropped from bosses
• Like combat to be more calculated and math based
• Value polish, but at the expense of freshness
• Prefer more class choices with rigid progression
• Like a much more varied appearance across races, but far less customization
• Prefer to have UI with many gauges and timers to maximize your performance in your role.

ESO is better if...
• You value story more than challenge
• You value exploration, gathering and treasure hunting
• You like a simple and focused ability bar
• You feel leveling is a means to an end: getting to explore new areas and doing more quests
• Enjoy a more realistic art style and more serious moods.
• Like a crafting system with depth that yields extremely powerful items
• Prefer ability variance, but accept a degree of imbalance
• Like combat to be more reactive and "actiony"
• Value freshness, but at the expense of polish
• Prefer fewer class choices with flexible progression
• Like more depth in character customization, but a much closer similarity of overall appearance across races
• Prefer a more minimalist UI to focus more on the world and what's happening to your character.

For me there's a lot to love in ESO. Action based combat, good PvP, real meaningful choices around character builds, tonnes of exploration, less focus on the end game and more on just playing the game.

Which is about as much of a sales pitch as I can be arsed to make :) I'll be playing WoW and ESO, and liking them for different reasons.

I didn't play all that much of it, but know a couple of people who have, and have seen many reviews/play through videos. I personally couldn't get past the looks or the lack of effect you have on the world compared to Skyrim. It's more dated looking in it's animation and how 'artificial' the characters feel in the virtual space than I was expecting or hoping for.

I realise it's all about personal choice, I'm not about to start telling people not to play it, but it just didn't float my boat, and a huge amount of people seem to agree by the reportedly terrible sales figures, and the difficulty people are having finding decent population realms.

With a free to play model, I think they would have had a lot more success, but from what I understand it's sold about 20% of what SWOTR did in it's launch period, which is worrying for long term survival.

Quoted figures for pre orders were circa 150,000 vs 600,000 for SWTOR

To each their own. But there are no realms, there are only two mega-servers, EU and US. The EU one at least feels very populated - my trade guild is up to 480 members in just a few days.

I feel exactly the same as Dranella regarding ESO.

I never could be motivated to do anything in the game when I tried the beta. The world looks amazing, but that´s not enough.

Ok, the PvP might seem interesting, but they have no mini games (like battlegrounds, Arenas, Warzones, Scenarios...). Which again means you have to gather a bunch of people to really be able to do anything in the PvP. I have a feeling it will go Free to Play within a year.

I think the biggest problem is the monthly fees models. Sure, it can work, but for some reason it came as a surprise to me when I first heard about that. I played beta just for a few hours so cannot judge the game based on that, the tutorial wasn't bad but I didnt get the "wow I gotta get that" feeling for sure. Don't get me wrong, I might get to play it at some point, I even want to try it out one day, but I agree with Chak that free to play model would've suited it better. And as there've been comparison with SWTOR already, not sure how accurate that is but I've heard that since SWTOR became free-to-play Bioware actually made more money than when it was pay-to-play. And truth is that when I logged into the game last December, it seemed damn full.

Think you are right in that Nibsy. Free-to-play saved SWTOR and they actually have a healthy population on the servers that are left now.

I still play a bit, the PvP is fun and I like the stories in short-ish doses.

I'll probably return to it for a bit to see the changes. See if it's worth it or not.

I tried playing this at launch but combat was so clunky.. and so many bugs :-/ I might give it a go again if we have a bunch of people to play with.

I read the combat is getting some kind of overhaul. Don't know how exactly :p
